Scam artists claiming to install energy meters that “save money”

13/02/2023

The scam involves paying to have another meter fitted or a device added that can mimic or reduce the amount of energy being used.

These claims are completely false and illegal. Energy meters belong to your energy supply company and should only be worked on by qualified engineers.

Allowing or undertaking work by a non-qualified person could risk explosions and fires, so this is an incredibly dangerous scam which could cost lives.

We are asking customers to stay extra vigilant and if approached by anyone claiming to save you money on your bills, speak to your energy provider first. Never let anyone touch your meters unless they can prove they are qualified to do so.

Keeping customers safe in their home is our priority, which is why we take steps to end tenancies and take legal action where meters or their supply are tampered with.

Each year we’ll contact tenants to carry out a gas service free of charge where one of our trusted engineers can give you tips and advice to programme your system to suit your lifestyle and reduce energy use where possible.
